Audio Transformers for
Recording Studios and Music Production
Audio Transformers’ Critical Role in Recording Studios
A recording studio lives and dies by sound quality because each and every signal path relies on transformers for impedance matching, signal balancing and even noise rejection. A bad transformer causes hum, smears transients and removes the mix of clarity.
Custom Magnetics builds audio transformers that preserve the integrity of the source signal. Our designs use carefully selected core materials, precise winding geometries and tight tolerances to deliver clean headroom, extended frequency response and low distortion. Whether you are outfitting a vintage Neve-style console or building a modern interface, our transformers help your gear perform.
Music Production
The transformer shapes the sound you hear in music production actively. The choice between push-pull and single ended output transformers changes how an amplifier feels and responds when you play. Hard rock needs tight low end and punchy attack, so a push-pull transformer with low leakage and stiff regulation works the best. Blues players normally choose single ended designs because when the amp is pushed they add warm saturation and a vocal like bloom. Funk rhythm tracks need snappy transients and glassy highs that come from low interwinding capacitance and a core that responds fast.
Custom Magnetics voices transformers for these specific applications. We do not guess. Instead, we work with builders and technicians to match core size, air gap, primary inductance and copper resistance to the intended playing style. The result is a transformer that feels right under the fingers and sits correctly in a mix.
Chokes and Power Supplies
The power supply choke shapes the noise floor and note envelope, but it often gets overlooked. A choke that’s specified in the right way reduces hum, smooths out bloom and keeps the low end steady. We build chokes with the same attention to detail as our output and power transformers. We also offer options for inductance (H), DC resistance (DCR), core material and gapping to match the rectifier type and power rail requirements.
We can spec the choke alongside the output and power transformers so the entire supply feels intentional whether you need higher DCR for vintage squish or lower DCR for modern punch.
Built for the Studio and the Stage
Recording studios and live sound rigs demand reliability. A transformer that fails mid-session or buzzes during a quiet passage is unacceptable. Custom Magnetics builds transformers in North Manchester, Indiana, with FAI documentation, fixtures and lot traceability. Our production runs range from five to twenty thousand parts, covering prototypes, boutique runs and full production tours.
We provide drawings, test limits and tolerances that your amp techs and contract manufacturers can actually use. That level of documentation matters when you are servicing vintage consoles or scaling up a new amplifier line.
