Transformers for
Electronic Applications
Printed circuit boards get smaller every year. Enclosures shrink. Power budgets tighten. Yet the transformers and coils inside those electronics still have to do their jobs without taking up too much space or generating too much heat.
Custom Magnetics builds magnetic components that fit the physical and electrical constraints of modern electronic equipment. We have supplied parts for consumer electronics, industrial controls, medical devices, communication gear and test instruments for over forty years.
Off-the-shelf magnetics rarely match the voltage, current or mounting requirements of a specific PCB layout. Our team works from your schematic and mechanical drawing to wind a transformer that fits your board.
Laminated core transformers handle line-frequency power from 50 Hz to 400 Hz. Applications include low-voltage power supplies, isolation for analog and digital circuits, standby power for appliances, as well as doorbells, thermostats and security systems.
Toroidal transformers have a round shape with lower radiated field compared to laminated types and work well where space is limited or nearby circuits are sensitive to magnetic interference. Common uses include audio equipment and preamplifiers, medical monitoring devices, laboratory power supplies, and telecommunications gear.
Ferrite core transformers handle high frequency switching in modern power converters and their small size is good for compact electronics. We wind them for off-line switching power supplies, DC-DC converters, gate drive circuits, and LED drivers.
Coils, Chokes and Inductors for Circuit Conditioning
Electronic circuits often need more than voltage transformation. Noise filtering, energy storage and signal conditioning all require carefully wound coils.
We build common mode chokes to suppress conducted EMI on power lines and signal cables. Differential mode chokes handle lower frequencies where line noise causes trouble. Current sense coils feed feedback signals to control circuits. And custom inductors store energy in switching regulators or filter ripple from DC outputs.
Small Parts, Tight Tolerances
Electronics demand consistency from one part to the next. A transformer that works on the bench must work the same way when one thousand units run through production.
Our winding equipment and testing procedures hold tight tolerances on inductance, turns ratio and DC resistance. Each part gets checked against your specifications before it leaves the building.
Working with PCB Layouts
Because board space costs money, through-hole parts give way to surface mount designs and height restrictions rule out tall components.
We wind transformers on standard or custom bobbins to match your footprint with terminal styles including through-hole pins, surface mount pads, flying leads and solder lug configurations. Tell us your maximum height and board area and we will recommend a core shape and winding method that fits.
Thermal Performance That Matters
Small electronics run hot inside sealed enclosures. A transformer that overheats will fail or cause trouble elsewhere.
Our designs account for temperature rise. We select magnet wire insulation ratings, core materials and construction methods that keep the component within its operating range, even when ambient temperatures climb.
