Frequently Asked Questions

What does Custom Magnetics Inc. manufacture?

Custom Magnetics designs and manufactures custom transformers, inductors, chokes, ignition coils, and other magnetic components for OEM, aftermarket, and industrial applications. All products are engineered to meet customer‑specific electrical, mechanical, and environmental requirements.

Do you build coils to OEM specifications?

Yes. We manufacture components that meet or exceed OEM specifications, including electrical performance, insulation requirements, materials, and dimensional tolerances. We also produce aftermarket and replacement coils built to the same

Can you build custom transformers based on my electrical specifications?

Yes, we can build fully custom transformers based on your exact electrical specifications. We design and manufacture transformers tailored to required voltage, current, inductance, frequency, size, and environmental conditions.

Do you offer epoxy encapsulation for high‑voltage coils and transformers?

Yes. We specialize in epoxy encapsulation, providing superior dielectric strength, moisture protection, and long‑term durability for high‑voltage ignition coils and transformers.

Can you design custom magnetic components from scratch?

Absolutely. Our engineering team can design coils, transformers, and inductors based on your electrical requirements, operating environment, and performance goals. We support full development—from concept and prototyping to production.

Can you reverse‑engineer an existing coil or transformer?

Absolutely. We can reverse‑engineer legacy, discontinued, or OEM components, matching or improving performance, materials, and insulation systems.

Do you manufacture coils for harsh or high‑temperature environments?

Yes. We design coils using high‑temperature insulation, epoxy encapsulation, and ruggedized materials for extreme heat, vibration, moisture, and chemical exposure.

What information do I need to include in the quote request?

Typical requirements include:

  • Electrical specifications (voltage, current, inductance, turns ratio, etc.)
  • Operating environment (temperature, vibration, moisture exposure)
  • Mechanical dimensions or mounting requirements
  • Annual volume or production estimates

If you’re unsure, our engineering team can help define the specifications.

Do you support low‑volume or prototype coil manufacturing?

Yes. We offer prototype builds, small‑batch production, and full‑scale manufacturing, making it easy to validate designs before committing to large volumes.

What insulation methods do you offer for coils and transformers?

We offer epoxy encapsulation, varnish impregnation, and specialty insulation systems depending on voltage, environment, and performance requirements.

Are your magnetic components certified or compliant with industry standards?

Custom Magnetics is ISO 9001:2015 certified and we can design your components to be compliant with UL, CSA, and TUV for specialized applications.

What is your typical lead time for custom coils or transformers?

Lead times vary by complexity and volume. Standard production is typically 6–12 weeks, with prototypes often completed sooner.

What core materials do you use for transformers and inductors?

We work with laminated steel, ferrite, powdered iron, and specialty magnetic alloys, selected based on frequency, voltage, and performance requirements.

Can you improve the performance of an existing coil or transformer design?

Yes. We can optimize winding geometry, insulation systems, magnetic materials, and manufacturing processes to increase durability, efficiency, or spark energy.

What industries do you serve?

We supply components to a wide range of industries, including:

  • Audio Recording & Music Production
  • Medical
  • Oil & Gas
  • Railroad
  • Small engine and Outdoor Power Equipment
  • Industrial Equipment
  • Energy and Power Systems
  • Electronics

Are your products certified?

Yes, Custom Magnetics is ISO 9001:2015 certified and our products can be designed to be compliant with UL, CSA, and TUV standards. We also maintain ITAR compliance for defense‑related projects.

Do you offer prototyping or low‑volume production?

Yes. We support prototype builds, small‑batch runs, and full‑scale production. This allows customers to validate designs before committing to large‑volume manufacturing.

What is your typical lead time?

Lead times vary by project complexity, materials, and volume. Standard production orders typically range from 6–12 weeks, while prototypes may be completed sooner. We provide accurate timelines during the quoting process.

Can you replicate an existing coil or transformer?

Yes. We can reverse‑engineer an existing component to match or improve its performance. This is common for legacy equipment, discontinued parts, or aftermarket replacements.

Where are your products manufactured?

Our products are manufactured at our facility in the United States, and at our joint venture property in Borada, India. Both facilities ensure quality control, traceability, and consistent performance.
